Basically the reason that the default Smart Delivery template is DATA is
because the DATA template has the logic for storing mail in a user's
mailbox. You can make the Smart delivery template anything that you want
including a non-standard template.

Subject: [iMS] Smart Delivery using RCPT?

instead of DATA? All the logic that verifies a proper local address is in
my RCPT.cfm template. So if I bypass that and go right to DATA.cfm, there
might not be a valid account to deliver to, even though the domain is local.
Also for running backup MX services, the relay-to-mx commands are in my RCPT
template, and going straight to DATA will reject the mail since there are no
local accounts at all for the domain.
