Logistically, it's just impossible for each of their mail gateways 
around the world to query for the envelope recipient in a base of 20 
million accounts.

The gateways do validate in real-time the envelope sender's domain in DNS.

afaik, AOL doesn't subscribe to MAPS or other blacklists.
