Config is a CF/iMS machine relaying through an outbound gateway, a 1 GHz
FreeBSD box. The "connection time" is the average session time seen by
SMTPD process on the gateway from the time CFX-ims connects to the ip of
gateway, sends one msg, and disconnects. (ie, delivery to internet is not
included, this is across a LAN)

The 200 msg test was a hard-coded loop with an empty msg, avg connect time
was 4 secs per msg.

Using the real list server app with a 21 kbyte msg, delay is 45 to 60 secs.

Heres the report section:

Per-Hour SMTPD Connection Summary
hour connections time conn. avg./conn. max. time
     --------------------------------------------------------------------
     1400-1500 327 0:31:10 6s 34s
     1500-1600 1460 24:17:17 60s 255s

Just before 15:00, the 200 msgs were sent plus 127 "application" msgs.

Since 15:00, only the applications msgs have been sent. Removing the 127
app msgs with 60 sec delay, from the 327, we think the 200 test msgs
averaged about 4 secs.

The question is why are the app msgs taking 10 to 15 times longer?

The LAN is 100 megabits, so we are sure the physical transit time of 21
kbytes of app msg is not a factor vs the empty test msgs.

The gateway also delivers several 1000 msgs at just 2 secs/msg to a 2nd
"garbage collection" relay that has all the deferred msgs dumped on it.

The gateway has 40 to 70 SMTPD dynamic processes running accepting msgs
from iMS box. Its these SMTPD processes that are connected 45 to 60 secs
each to receive one msg.
