Well you can start by doing a tracert from your mail machine to the servers you're 
having problems with and see what the path looks like (ie. look for timeouts or long 
response times).  There's also a possibility your server is having resource problems, 
but that would be pretty obvious if you're at the console.

This does bring up a question for Howie though:  Is there any way to change this 
timeout value?  Not sure how useful that would be but I suppose if one was on a 
bad/slow connection it might help.
