Mark,

if you store the mail files on the filesystem rather than in the DB (Blob
,clobs whatever ) the queries are real simple

That mailfile name is store in the DB rather than the mail itself...

like:
Is this the email address valid at this domain
Get me all the mails in folder x
read mail x
Delete mail x


etc.

Simple ,...of course make sure you store your mail files on a RAID device
with backups etc..

You can store the mails in the DB of course and get the benefits from
replication, backups  etc in oracle ..
