Thanks to Alexandre and Colin. I just tried to "make en" and it works (with many errors, some of which I can track down), but the intro.xml and menu-paths.xml files don't seem to be included in the html build. The index file syntax seems okay (those entries are the same as the others) so I have no idea what's wrong. All the other files appear to be included.
