Thanks to everyone who looked at this. Apparently there are version mismatches lurking on my system. Since I am not an admin and apple and my various fink repos have not put out a 5.8.8 which the current version of IPC::Open3 (1.02) wants, I'm content to continue using Inline::Java without the shared JVM feature.
