Help uncover discrimination and vilification against Arab and Muslim Australians
A project being conducted for the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission by the Centre for Cultural Research at the University of Western Sydney is aiming to uncover experiences of anti-Arab and anti-Muslim prejudice and discrimination in NSW and Victoria.
The research team is led by Associate Professor Scott Poynting and includes Dr Greg Noble and Dr Paul Tabar.
The study will use both questionnaires and some interviews to reveal detailed information about individual incidents of racial discrimination. Our aim is ultimately to improve Australias response to discrimination against Arabs and Muslims.
This research supports the Commissions Isma (Listen) project, a series of consultations with members of Arab and Muslim communities across Australia to uncover the experiences of discrimination, abuse and violence since 11 September 2001.
The consultations have uncovered many experiences of race discrimination and vilification experienced by Arab and Muslim Australians which can be viewed online at www.humanrights.gov.au/racial_discrimination/isma/index.html
The questionnaire is available in either English or Arabic. It asks:
" Have you experienced any racism, abuse or violence since 11 September 2001?
" If so, where? How often? Who was involved?
" Did you formally complain about this experience or report it to anyone?
" If not, why not? If so, were you satisfied with the response?
Participation is voluntary and any personal details provided will remain completely confidential.
