Canterbury Tales: A weblog of stories by some of the pilgrims on a
journey together at the Uniting Church NSW Synod meeting at Canterbury
Park Race Course.

The concept behind this project came out of some post-mortem thinking
about the Uniting Church's National Assembly held in 2003.

One of the significant issues was communication of events at the
Assembly with the wider Uniting Church. Unfortunately, most of the wider
church (and members in the Uniting Church) essentially got to hear about
what was happening through the public media outlets. This was not
particularly helpful when it came to the sexuality debate.

One thing that was clear that the Internet was particularly helpful in
getting information to the congregations.

The idea of the website is to establish an experimental (read
unofficial) media outlet that reports on the happenings of the Uniting
Church's NSW Synod meeting. Essentially the writers/contributors would
be members of Synod. I hope that we might have at least five regular
writers/contributors. As the Synod now meets in 'table groups' I would
really like to have one writer/contributor per table at Synod.
Basically, anyone can contribute.

The website will be constructed using a web log (or blog) as a kind of
media outlet with a focus on informing people and providing
comment/personal reflection on stuff. While the content will mostly be
serious it is hoped that satire and humour will also be used to explore
the issues.

I hope that the website will be more than a publishing/media outlet. I
would like to see it become more like a temporary community. The real
value of the Internet is to enable people to engage in dialogue. The
website will have the capacity for people in the congregations to
participate -- to write comment, respond, ask questions, and let us know
what the outside world is saying. Hopefully it will make the meeting of
Synod more accessible and more connected to the wider community of
faith. However, this is an experiment, so we don't know what will
happen. It will only work if people actually participate.

This years Synod will be meeting at Canterbury Race Course. So with
tongue firmly planted in our cheek I have decided to call our weblog the
"Canterbury Tales".

The website can be found at http://canterbury-tales.unitingchurch.org.au

If you would like to participate drop me an email... and I will fill you
in with more stuff in the near future.

Shalom

Dean
