Watch out for today's column by Caroline Regidor in the www.dailytelegraph.com.au to come online at http://dailytelegraph.news.com.au/section.jsp?sectionid=1269
Headed "Gay one minute, passe the next", regidor gives a cultural context to the gay question. Some quotes will put the tone into context. "Celesbian is a word coined to describe celebrities who engage in lesbian antics in order to attract publicity." "Then there is 'hasbian', a former lesbian who is now in a heterosexual relationship. You could say actor Anne Heche went from celesbian to hasbian." "There is also 'post-gay'." "John Howard argued that marriage is central to the survival of the species. Peter Costello pointed to the black and white nature of the law: 'Marriage is the partnership between a man and a woman; that's the definition we have in the law.'" "Gay rights... might have even fizzled out because homosexuality has so successfully integrated the mainstream." "Metrosexual chic is all the rage and tio hell with it if people think you're gay because you look good...." "In rural NSW, it's probably not so easy to be openly gay.... No doubt they'll be waiting a long time for those wheels of public opinion to turn." [end] -- Peter R.
