We have been known to disagree when it comes to music so this is unlikely to come as a surprise but I think
1) The Australian Idol show is pretty crap... I mean really stage
managed, artificial, trite etc (not a comment about individual 'artists' talents of course)
2) The voyeuristic element evident in shows like this still make me cry.
I disliked Stock Aitken and Waterman in the 80's and I dislike Idol in the noughties.
A wet blanket I am sure Niall
PS - There is a lyric in a song (I think by Arnie de Franka - can someone please tell me how to spell her name) which says something
'a record used to be a record of people making music in a room' and
goes on to bemoan cross-marketing and other things...

Hi All, I've been interested in this thread developing about Australian Idol... which I have been watching out of curiosity and thinly justified cultural interest over the weeks when I have not been busy working or worshipping [sometime those things happen at the same time].
What if we just ignore it because the show is not our bag... OR watch, enjoy, or even vote if we think Guy is the best choice of the bunch... then we let the show, his progress and possible fame be the opportunity for him to express his journey however he chooses... The show haven't shown much of that part of his story but it has been mentioned on various occasions!!
Interestingly he showed a fairly narrow range early on [pretty much Prince or Craig David style] but has really broadened his song choice and style in recent weeks to emerge as the strongest voice of the lot.... his 'fro, humility and sense of humour are part of 'the package' as they are fond of describing things..
Not my style of music.... Cosima had potential there, but her voice really did strain under the pressure...
Anyhow, back to my lurking now!!
Rob

I don't doubt the man's beliefs or faith but just a questionan
I know we're not supposed to worship idol's but what about if you become
idol is it still idolatry?is
On the other hand I think there could be a bit of Christian tall poppy syndrome in all this. Whenever a Christian achieves success in the wider world the first thing we want to do is to question their authenticity - "he's probably not a real Christian then" we say, underlying this I think
an attitude along the lines of "real Christian's suffer, plod along andare
battlers". I'm not saying everybody reacted this way, I've deleted mostof
ofthe earlier comments so am going on a general impression from memory which is always dangerous, but I know I reacted this way. I heard this (good?) news and the first thing I wanted to do was pick holes in it or him. I think this says a lot about our culture as Christians we don't have a lot
respect for the things individuals achieve.there
Having said all that, I'm all for being counter cultural which is why you won't find me contesting in or even watching Australian Idol. I think
man'sare plenty of good reasons for Christians to be opposed to such a contest but I think we should give credit where credit's due and not doubt the
backingrelationship with God or that he's trying to worship and witness to his faith the best way he knows how
