It seems Pauline and David have changed thier ideas on prisons. From a strong law and order perspective- all prisoners are bad people, make sentences longer, prisons are like holiday camps- they now seem to have come to realise that losing your liberty is a terrible punishment, that many prisoners are simply ordinary people who made mistakes, and that miscarriages of justice do occur. Could they now become advocates for reform of prison and justice systems?
I have been wondering whether we should get Pauline and David declared illegal immigrants and arrange for them to be locked up in Port Hedland or Baxter Detention Centres for a couple of months. Then they may come out with a better understanding of refugee and asylum seeker issues. There are a lot of -very nice people in prison who made one mistake in their lives and they -get locked up," he said. -"I learned that if a judge says you have three years in jail, your -family suffers that sentence. There are people in jail who have wives -and girlfriends and children. Those people all suffer tremendously -during that period of incarceration." I heard once (I think in an American context) that a liberal was just a conservative who hadn't been mugged yet. Perhaps a conservative is a liberal who hasn't been to jail yet?
