We need to start fighting the spin. John Howard on the radio this morning (ABC Local) says that while they did ask for asylum, the area they were in was excised from Australia migration zone so they don't have a claim anyway. He also said it in such a way that the government knew all along that they had asked, but it wasn't important because their request was 'illegitimate'. This is fantastic spin on John's behalf, and we need to alert others too it. He's taken the focus away from the government having lied by suggesting nothing illegal has occurred regarding the request for asylum. It's a smooth switch of focus. Let me be blunt. I don't give a stuff about whether the asylum seekers were our of order or not. John Howard's government lied to me by not telling me that they had asked for asylum. Forget whether the claims for asylum are justified, it's all about the lie. They are two separate debates here, and John Howard, as slick as goose poop, has quickly shifted it away from the debate about government honesty. Let's shift it back. I'm thinking of making a T-shirt that has the statements I made above to wear as the election campaign approaches. Anyone interested in developing the idea? I list of lies the government has told in a solid block of text would make an great public political statement while remaining humorous and thus well received. No children were thrown over-board :: There are no weapons of mass des- truction :: They did ask for asylum :: add next lie here...
