Frontier Services - UCA

Frontier Services wins Prestigious Award

Frontier Services, Australias leading provider of health and community services to Outback Australia, has been recognised once again as an employer of choice for women at the EOWA (Equal Opportunity for Women in the Workplace Agency) Business Achievement Awards 2003.

Frontier Services was presented the award for the Most Outstanding Result for the Advancement of Women, one of 7 major awards in a highly competitive field. Frontier Services has been recognised as an Employer of Choice for Women each year since the EOWA Business Achievement Awards commenced in 2001. The awards were established to promote and recognise equality of employment opportunities and conditions for women. Other organisations to win major awards this year include McDonalds, IBM, American Express, SC Johnson & Son, Autoliv Australia, ING, ANZ and the Cairns Region Training Group.

The award recognised the outstanding results achieved by Frontier Services in its Indigenous Training Program conducted in the Kimberley Region of WA. Frontier Services National Director, Rosemary Young, said the real winners are the 5 courageous women who took up the challenge of working towards formal qualifications in community service something they thought to be all but impossible. The self-belief and pride generated when they successfully completed their Certificate III in Community Service was a great reward for all concerned. Not only has Frontier Services gained more highly skilled and motivated workers, but family members and communities have been inspired by their achievements. As a result, many more staff members in the Kimberley Region have decided to undertake training.

We were delighted to receive this recognition of the importance we place on supporting our staff. Of the more than 450 people we employ across Australia, approximately 90% are women. Many work in remote locations where the challenges of isolation and cultural barriers are enormous.

We are utterly dependent on being able to recruit and retain extraordinary staff. One of the most important things to us is to ensure that staff feel they have the skills they need to do their jobs well. This results in a high level of job satisfaction, which in turn results in happy and motivated workers. That's why we have provided services continuously for the past 90 years, and thats why we will continue to do so, even though many others are retreating from remote areas.

Many employees of Frontier Services are not forced to stick to rigid rosters or strict work arrangements but are allowed to work their own hours, as long as the job gets done. For example, rather than work in shifts, some staff work one week on, one week off which enables them to spend their week off somewhere that's not quite so remote. One staff member chooses to work 10 weeks straight and then take six weeks off.

This flexible and supportive work environment has resulted in an unusually low staff turnover well below the 20 per cent mark recorded by most other community service organisations.

Uniting Justice - UCA

One more lie in a long line of lies, says Uniting Church leaders

Leaders of the Uniting Church in Australia today (14/11/03) said they are not surprised that the Australian Government ignored the pleas for asylum of the Turkish Kurds from the Minasa Bone.

Australias legislative response to asylum seekers has once again been shown to be a charade, said the President of the Uniting Church, Rev. Dr Dean Drayton.

Rev. Elenie Poulos, the National Director of UnitingJustice, said, The Federal Government has long been misleading the Australian public about its refugee policies.

The Government has consistently maintained that its policies do not breach our human rights obligations they do. It claims that people have been well cared for in our detention centres they are not. It claims that Australias refugee policy is admired and respected it is not. And of course, the children thrown overboard were not.

Rev. Poulos, who has recently returned from meetings of UNHCR in Geneva, went on to say Australias reputation has not so much been damaged by the latest lies but rather reinforced.

The international community are only too aware of Australias willingness to breach its international obligations. What may shock them is how exactly how far this Government is prepared to go.

It is extraordinary that the Government has been willing to risk its integrity over a small boatload of desperate people. And it is indeed a sad time in our countrys history when we close our hearts and our borders to match, she said.
