"Australia's Uniting Church is calling for a community-based system
for processing asylum-seekers as an alternative to the current government policy
of mandatory detention.
The Church is releasing its report on a seven-year long project in which asylum-seekers lived in the community on bridging visas. Uniting Church Victorian moderator, Reverend Sue Gorman, says the system was a success, with no-one running away or failing to meet Department of Immigration requirements.
