Peter, I think you open up a whole can of worms here. The question of what is idolatory and what is not is a difficult area. It was the church (Catholic) that decarled that Jesus was 'divine' or God and was to be worshiped and it was the church that decided what would be the cannon of scripture. Why can't the same church decide that Mary was divine etc? Another question that I raised last year was about the "reasonableness of faith". It seems completely unreasonable for us protestants to believe that Mary was perpetualy without sin and also a perpetual virgin etc who asscended bodily into heaven. But is it any more reasonable for protestants to believe that Jesus bodily ascended into heaven or that there will be a time when all the good guys will simply float off up to heaven as well? I find it interseting that there are many Catholics I have spoken with (including priests) who no longer believe this sort of stuff and Mary rarely gets a mention in their liturgies. It may also be part of the reason why so many Western Catholics are abondoning the church. I go back to my original statement. Faith doesn't have to be provable, but it does need to be reasonable. The heart will never completely accept what the mind does not fully believe.
