Just a thought
Every Tuesday about 15 people gather for worship in the Assembly meeting room.
The Assembly is a community of people who come from various denominations and cultures but we find our unity in the worship of a common Lord and a shared call to the work of the Assembly.
This week teetering on the brink of Lent we reflected on the way of discipleship. Christian discipleship is so at odds with the way of the world with its preoccupation with power, self reliance and self assurance. In Lent we are invited to recall that which makes for discipleship abandonment of self, obedience to the call of God, letting go of all that restrains the possibility of Gods work in our lives, and of course the cross.
The Gospel set for Ash Wednesday (Matthew 6: 1- 6 and 16 - 21) has Jesus reminding people that proper actions themselves are not enough. To parade ones piety for all to see undoes it - for this is its own reward! Rather the servant of God is the one who, lacking all self consciousness, just does what God requires. This quiet faithfulness is open to misunderstanding, and may not even seem like faith to others. Yet like Jesus before us it doesnt really matter what people think. This attitude is the ultimate sign that a person has abandoned self for God. The one who matters is the one who can see where the bone and marrow meet, where joint and sinew come together, who sees what we do in secret

FRONTIER SERVICES:
Much Needed Boost to Outback Kids
Up to 1000 children in Outback Queensland will receive a real boost to the start of the school year as school packs containing essential stationery items are given to them over the next few weeks.
The project is an initiative of Frontier Services supported by the Rural Education Fund, and it aims to support outback families who have been struggling with adverse environmental and economic conditions over the past few years.
Qantas will begin distributing the first packs to five regional centres today. From there, they will be picked up by Frontier Services Remote Area Families Service (RAFS) and delivered to the children aged from 3 to12 years who living in Outback Queensland.
Frontier Services Community Services Manager, Marina Izatt, said, Last year we were able to help around 600 children. This year, with the generous help of Officeworks and Qantas, we have been able to increase the number to 1000 children. This is just such a worthwhile project and it means so much to families who have been doing it tough for some time now. The gift of school resources, particularly to those families with three or more children, is not only a great help to parents currently trying to make ends meet, but also reinforces that they are not alone.
The Rural Education Fund is managed by the Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal (FRRR), and was established by Baillieu and Sarah Myer, John and Janet Calvert-Jones and Tim and Gina Fairfax. It aims to assist with the education of children and youth in remote Australia, particularly during times of drought and rural recession.
RAFS field coordinator, Emma Drynan, said handing out the school packs, which contained such things as pens, pencils, glue, folders, crayons, scissors, rubbers, highlighters, exercise books and much more was a rewarding experience. When the kids open their packs, their eyes widen and they cant stop grinning.

Referral of "Proposal 84" to Congregations and Presbyteries: From: Terence Corkin, General Secretary, National Assembly
The materials approved by the Assembly Standing Committee for referral to the church went out in late January to Presbytery and Church Council Secretaries. Church Council Secretaries were asked to pass on the material to Congregational Secretaries as the Assembly did not have access to this information. Some materials did not arrive but this proved to be due to the failure of Australia Post, the addresses being out of date so they were either returned or disappeared into the void, or in some cases the materials not being passed on locally. Some people have expressed concern that the materials were not sent directly to Ministers. The Assembly did everything in its power to keep the Church appraised of the developments and made the materials available electronically. My understanding is that most, if not all, Synod Secretaries sent the materials electronically to the Ministers who could receive it that way within days of its release.
The closing date for responses is 30 April. A steady stream of responses are coming into the office and will be collated in early May.
I hope you will understand that the Assembly does not have the resources to acknowledge receipt of the responses.
Mission Prayer Handbook 2004 - Space for Gods glory: From: Wendie Wilkie, Associate General Secretary, National Assembly
A prayer used in worship from the MPH for 2004 so touched members of a suburban congregation that many asked for copies of that book. Recently a copy was sent to the Presbyterian Church USA who produce something similar but who were keen to get a copy of ours.
Have you got one yet? They are still available from the Assembly office. Please contact Lineta Neemia on (02) 8267 4238 or [EMAIL PROTECTED] for your copy. It is full of beautiful pictures sent in by congregations to the 10th Assembly photographic display. Its prayers and reflection on biblical passages will be appreciated by a wide range of people.
The Bible with Understanding by Rev Dr Gordon Dicker: From: Terence Corkin, General Secretary, National Assembly
The Bible with Understanding by Rev Dr Gordon Dicker has been a very helpful book for people wanting to understand the way in which the Scriptures were written, came to us today and how they function as authoritative in the life of the church. This book is now out of print and the Assembly is considering whether to reprint it. If you are interested in purchasing this book or would use it with a study group please contact Linda on [EMAIL PROTECTED] If there is sufficient interest then we may be able to make it available.
Frontier Services:
Flynns vision realised in Birdsville 80 years on
Frontier Services announced today that it would not continue to provide a nursing service in Birdsville beyond 2004.
The Diamantina Shire Council has obtained funding to build a new clinic for Birdsville, said Rosemary Young, National Director of Frontier Services, and we are delighted to make the land owned by Frontier Services adjacent to the existing clinic, available for that purpose.
We congratulate Council and the community of Birdsville on taking this initiative!
For over 90 years, we have been called on to provide services to Outback communities when those services would otherwise not be available, and we have supported Birdsville in this way since John Flynn established our first clinic there in 1923.
Now that the Birdsville Community feels able to sustain a service into the future, Frontier Services is in a position to allocate its energies and resources to supporting other remote communities and to share our expertise as a leader in remote area health care further.
This will conclude more than 80 years of providing nursing services to the people of Birdsville by Frontier Services and its predecessor, the Australian Inland Mission, said Mrs Young.
We will of course, continue to provide services until the new clinic is completed, which is expected to be before the end of this year.
A clinic has stood on this site since 1936 however the original building was destroyed by fire in 1951 and rebuilt in 1952, making this building over 50 years old. The first nursing services were provided from the old Royal Hotel building, which John Flynn had rented to serve as the first nursing home.
Frontier Services will continue to serve the residents of the Diamantina Shire. Our Patrol Ministers and Remote Area Families Service (RAFS) will continue to visit and provide vital support to families in the region, said Mrs Young. And we hope to make good use of the old Birdsville Hospital to provide additional accommodation for those providing services to the new clinic and to develop an historic display which recognises the contribution of the many who have served over the past 80 years.
Frontier Services plans to mark this significant milestone with a major celebration in Birdsville later this year.
Staff movements: From: Terence Corkin, General Secretary, National Assembly
It was reported in the December issue of Assembly Update that Wendie Wilkie was standing aside as the Associate General Secretary from May this year. I am pleased to report that Wendie has decided to postpone her departure until October. This has arisen for a number of reasons not least the need in the Assembly for her to continue with her important ministries until later in the year. I am very pleased that Wendie is staying on for a few more months.
On 4 February Rev Dr Sandy Yule was inducted as the Assembly Secretary for Christian Unity. This position is for four days per week and on other days Sandy will be involved with post graduate students at the United Faculty in Melbourne. Sandy has recently returned from a time serving in a teaching ministry with the Free Wesleyan Church of Tonga. He replaced Rev Dr Rob Gallacher who retired (again) after four very fruitful years with the Christian Unity Working Group. Sandy can be contacted on: (03) 9606 0034 or at [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Minutes of the 10th Assembly: From: Terence Corkin, General Secretary, National Assembly
The Minutes of the Assembly meeting are available from the Assembly Office at 222 Pitt Street, Sydney at $11 per copy or $10 per copy for orders of ten or more.
Copies of the Minutes are available by contacting Linetta by email at [EMAIL PROTECTED] or by telephone on (02) 8267 4428.
Alternatively, you may send a cheque to the UCA Assembly, PO Box A2266, Sydney South NSW 1235.
The Minutes are also available on the web at assembly.uca.org.au/assembly2003/Minutes03/index
Theology & Discipleship: From: Paul Walton, Chairperson, National Working Group on Worship
The Working Group on Worship met 19-21 February, and made good progress in the preparation of Uniting in Worship 2. It will be published in the second half of the year as a book containing authorised resources and a CD-ROM with other resources.
The book will contain three full Services of the Lord's Day, and a Baptism Service which will include all people to be baptised, whether children or adults. Resources for the Catechumenate will also be included.
Marriage and Funeral services have been revised, and other resources have been added: e.g., a Service of Blessing of a Civil Marriage, and a Service for the Interment of Ashes. A Service for the Blessing of a Home, along with revisions of the services of healing upon the ending of a marriage and the birth of a stillborn child/death of a newly-born child, which will also be in the book.
Further projects include another Service of the Lord's Day, and revisions of ordination and commissioning services. Baptism, Marriage and Funeral services will be available in booklets; provision for the translation of UIW2 services and resources is being made.
Covenanting:
From: National Sorry Day Committee - Audrey Ngingali Kinnear and John Brown, Co-chairs, National Sorry Day Committee
On Sorry Day this year, 26 May, in Canberra a national memorial to the stolen generations will be unveiled. It will tell the tragic story of forced removal through the experiences of many of those involved. The text and design emerged from consultations, arranged by the National
Sorry Day Committee, with hundreds of the stolen generations, and with white Australians involved as staff members of institutions or as foster parents. In September it was unanimously approved by stolen generations people from all over the country meeting in Alice Springs, and last month it was approved by both Houses of the Federal Parliament. The full text can be read on our website - www.journeyofhealing.com.
No nation finds it easy to acknowledge the ugly side of its history. So this memorial is an important step. Its unveiling can bring together all who want to be part of the Journey of Healing, Indigenous and non-Indigenous, in gratitude for this step towards truth, and in recommitment to a wholehearted implementation of the Bringing Them Home report. Already events are being planned on that day in all capital cities and elsewhere. Here in Canberra, Mick Dodson, Professor of Indigenous Studies at the Australian National University, will host a Reconciliation Lecture.
Last year, former Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser spoke in the Great Hall of the Federal Parliament to commemorate the day. 'Sorry Day is a day to pause,' he said. 'A day to grieve together for the harm done, and to commit ourselves afresh to make things different.' May we invite you to arrange events in this spirit.
On Sorry Day, the stolen generations will be busy in events in their own areas. Many of them also want to commemorate the unveiling of the memorial in Canberra. So they plan to come to Canberra on Saturday 29 May, and they warmly welcome everyone to join them at this major community event.
This will be in the middle of Reconciliation Week, 27 May to 3 June. During the Week, Reconciliation Australia will launch a rolling program of activity in which everyone can be involved, building up to a national reconciliation conference in May 2005.
We hope that many institutions will take part in Sorry Day and Reconciliation Week - schools and universities, unions, local governments, churches, NGOs. If this happens, bridges will be built between indigenous and non-indigenous Australians all over the country, and constructive initiatives will flow in both directions across those bridges. And this will encourage our political parties to develop policies, in the lead-up to the Federal election, which can better the lives of Indigenous Australians, rather than (as happened in the last election) ignoring indigenous Australians.
As in previous years, our website - www.journeyofhealing.com - will carry information about Sorry Day events and programs throughout the country. Reconciliation Australia (www.reconciliation.org.au) will carry similar information for Reconciliation Week. Please let us know of your plans as that will give ideas and encouragement to others. A rising tide of initiatives by ordinary Australians through the next 18 months will ensure that the 2005 conference brings our governments and the community together in a firm commitment to deal with the injustices, and give Indigenous Australians a fair go.
If that happens, our country will take a huge step towards fulfilling the vision of the Council for Aboriginal Reconciliation: 'A united Australia which respects this land of ours, values the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander heritage and provides justice and equity for all.

The Uniting Church, as an ethnically diverse and multicultural community, has recognised the need for migrant-ethnic communities that are part of its life, to have opportunities to meet together for sharing and reflection and for discussion in their first language. In 1987 the first national conference was held. Since this formation of the Tongan National Conference, similar gatherings have occurred and there are now eight National Conferences: Tongan, Samoan, Fijian, Indonesian, Korean, Tamil, Chinese and Vietnamese. Some of these communities are quite small in the Uniting Church and some are quite large. The possibility of national gatherings for smaller communities is being explored.
The National Conferences establish a national networking between congregations of the same culture that cooperate in solving issues arising in the life of congregations and provide opportunities for each community to reflect on how it is developing ministry and mission within the life of the UCA. There is also the intention that the National Conferences will enable the voice of the different communities to be heard as they make their distinctive contribution to the life of the Uniting Church. Each National Conference represents a gathering of people who offer leadership within their community and upon whose leadership the Uniting Church can draw.

From: Terence Corkin, General Secretary, National Assembly
From time to time the Assembly is approached with offers that may be interest to the members of the church.
A recent one was from an ISP (Internet Service Provider) who has indicated that there is the opportunity for the Assembly to receive a rebate from its customers who choose to direct their support our way.
This news piece is to test whether there might be an interest within the church to use this service if the Assembly was to receive a rebate of $4 a month. This money would be used to enable the ongoing support that goes from the Assembly budget to Frontier Services, overseas mission and aid, Coolamon College and many other hands on ministries of the church. If you, or others you know, might be interested in this opportunity then please send a no obligation note to [EMAIL PROTECTED] just saying you would be interested in hearing more about this service if it is taken up by the Assembly.
