For those with access to a copy of New Statesman (e.g. at a university
library) or US$2 for a story at www.newstatesman.co.uk then you might care
to look at the cover-story for the 3 May 2004 edition: "Religion - Why do we
still give a damn?"

Note: The second-last point I've extracted is perhaps the most explosive.

The article canvasses why the UK cares about religion in its two-pager by
Barbara Gunnell (p18/19). Some things mentioned are:
-       72% of UK residents ticked the 'Christian' box in the 2001 census;
-       Why bishops are listened to;
- Poking fun at religious beliefs (in the UK) are still taboo (with
examples);
- A scan of other faihths and their experience, including among asylum
seekers;
-       CofE and Catholic schooling;
- (April 'representative poll' of British MPs): 57% would like to see
the CofE disestablished, the Queen cease to be its head, and the Prime
Minister cease to appoint bishops, 37% believing this would happen in the
next ten years;
-       tolerance;

Peter
