The time:
A Saturday morning, the morning of the church fete.
The place:
The driveway leading to the church hall.
The players:
A sixties something woman, married, a matriarch of the congregation,
a member of this church for over 40 years.
A late thirties something woman, unmarried, a junior partner in a city
law firm, a fairly new Christian, associated with this church for about
3-4 years.
The circumstance:
Lawyer is leaving fete. Matriarch is arriving. They meet in
driveway.
Matriarch: "Well! What a surprise. You are something of
a stranger to us these days."
Lawyer: "I'm sorry. I find it hard to attend every
Sunday. I don't know - it's my work ... worship ... and everything else.
I feel so very tired on Sunday mornings."
Matriarch: "I wouldn't worry about it, dear. It's for the
best. You're not really our type of person."
