I attended a ChilOut meeting last week at which Dr Sev Ozdowski
described the meticulous research that had gone into the HREOC "A Last
Resort?' Report. To have it tabled in Parliament on the eve of the
Budget was a disgrace. To then have DIMIA invite Telegraph journalists
along to a raid on Doyles [for those interstate: a top Sydney seafood
restaurant] thus further diverting media and public attention from the
Report makes my blood boil. Then to have Sen Vanstone praise the
journalists for covering the raid, when journalists have been refused
access to Nauru and other detention centres, makes me tremble with
rage!

At a public meeting with our local member - Dr Brendan Nelson - the
Friday before last, my daughter asked his opinion of the Report. His
reply: "Oh I haven't had time to look at it, but I believe that it's
all about the past, and only twelve children remain in detention!" As
we left the meeting she was able to tell him that "12" was Amanda's
distortion of the figures.

While the government is quietly doing some "nice" things for
asylum-seekers now in preparation for the elections they shouldn't be
allowed to get away with this!
