Actually OpenOffice creates a very portable PDF, in that it Just Works
(TM) across a wide range of scenarios. There's no need to apologies for
creating a document that others can easily read using free tools.

You could use the unix 'pdf2ps' and 'ps2pdf' tools to round trip the
file (or create a pdfs from a print-to-file) and make it smaller, but it
does have some consequences on the look of the content and sometimes (as
the case is here) it chokes converting the ps (postscript) file back to
pdf.

Alternatively, the Gnome desktop, as of version 2.6 (included as part of
many recently released Linux distributions), offers the ability to print
from many applications to a PDF document which means you can make PDFs
from your text editor, word processor or spreadsheet.
