Firstly I would like to thank all those of you who responded to my email about the UTC and agnosticism. These replies were sincere attempts to grapple with these issues and I am very appreciative of the honesty and rigour of the replies. Some have said that I am too blunt and too insensitive to social niceties, and if that is how you read me, then I am sorry. I'm not one for euphemisms and beating around the bush on difficult issues. But point taken and sorry for those of you who found my words to be too direct. Please don't mistake my directness for antagonism, and I am truly sorry if you find my words upset you.
Secondly, I have been very inspired by the brave stand the UCA took in opening the safe injecting room. I think one of the most "Christian" acts any Australian church has done in a while. Just like Jesus, going against the "Pharisees" to minister to society's outcasts. The Pharisees, unfortunately, mostly seem to come from the conservatie right-wing (sadly, often the religious right, from Christian churches in Australia), and they seem to take either the mean-spirited "druggies are miscreants and deserve to suffer" type attitude or the naive "spend more money on policing, that will fix the problem" view.
We have heard very little about the safe injecting room for a long time and I am wondering how it is going. Does anybody know? Also, as those of you who know me would realise, I am very passionate about Christian mission and I am wondering if it might be possible to introduce some Christian mission into the safe injecting room. Maybe they already are? Maybe the Pharisees would recoil in horror at the idea, but why should we let that stop us?
