Condoms probably don’t kill, (leaving aside questions of severe allergic reaction to their substances), but they may not be the key to eradication of the majority of HIV infections in Africa. The assumption that HIV is transmitted principally by sexual behaviour does not seem to tally with some of the evidence where condom campaigns and consequent reduction of other STDs is not associated with a reduction of new HIV infections. The reason may be that around 70% of HIV infections in Africa take place through contaminated medical equipment which, while intended for single use, is re-used because of budgetary constraints.
