Brian Mclaren is one on today's most interesting writers, his book A Generous Orthodoxy rediscovers the mysterious and compelling way that Jesus can be embraced across the entire Christian horizon.

This is another Emergent YS book and Youth Specialities has a sample of the book that can be downloaded from their website at: http://www.youthspecialties.com/store/freebies/generous_orthodoxy/Generous_Orthodoxy.pdf

This will probably only be online for a couple of days, so if you're interested do sownload it asap.

I'm currently reading his book "The story we find ourselves in" and am enjoying the journey...

From the Back Cover:

By celebrating strengths of many traditions in the church (and beyond), this book will seek to communicate a "generous orthodoxy." The book will be structured around why one would call oneself a:

1. Evangelical: Brian’s background. Biblical roots. Personal commitment. Fervently spiritual. Globally missional. Plus – good news. Concerns – take-overs, reactionary. Bigger circle. Post-liberal convergence – Lindbeck. Response in B & C. Good news.

2. Post-Protestant. The sociology of protest, rhetoric of exclusion. Owning embarrassments. Yet valid protest too. Early and late transitions. Liberal and conservative constructions.

3. Liberal: Free. Free inquiry. Core issues, not just periphery. Liberal arts. Multiple points of view. Problem with modern liberalism, potential of postliberalism.

4. Conservative. Conservation, gene pools. Calling. Strength of roots in Scripture, fruits in mission.

5. Charismatic/contemplative. Experiencing the Holy Spirit. Pentecostal way. Contemplative way.

6. Reformed: semper reformanda. Example of Calvin, Luther, etc. Bucer. Robinson quote. But – Isaac Newton, controlling God.

7. Ana/Baptist: Mennonites, radical reformers. Non-christendom. From margins. Community. Theology embodied. Land, soil. Peace. Uncentered.

8. Methodist: Need for method. Class. Quadrilateral as uncentered theology. Redemption and lift.

9. Pre/Post/Modern – post is not anti. Thesis, antithesis, synthesis. Consumerism.

10. Traditional: Traditions and tradition. Concept from Polanyi, personal knowledge, Christianity as art.

11. Post-denominational: Nondenominational. Value of denominations. Mutual fund. Empowerment and control. 7th Day Adventists … Catholics. Church of the last, lost detail.

12. Neo-Universalist: Quelling controversy – not universalism as commonly defined. Abrahamic call versus bad monotheism. "The value of a religion in a pluralist world is based on the benefits it brings its nonadherents." Judgment is universal, grace is universal, response is individual and frighteningly real.

13. Buddhist/Muslim/Hindu/Jewish. Seeing. Practice. Idealization in west. Seeing. Suffering. Noble truths and practices. Nobility. Meditation. Dalai Lama. C1-C6. Question of how Christianity interacts with world religions. Solidarity rather than conquest.

14. Neo/Paleo-Orthodox. Eastern orthodoxy. Greek concepts in West.

15. Anonymous: Horseless carriage. Alcoholics anonymous. Attraction, not promotion.

16. Depressed-yet-hopeful: State of Christianity, depressing. Rwanda. 9-11 Religious Right. Iraq. Yet hopeful. Celts. Mother Teresa.
