Thanks Sue, Stephen,

Following the 2002 election when the farm evictions took place there were
noises from the Australian Government that they would accept refugees from
Zimbabwe. After the first wave of violence everyone forgot about the
situation so I don't know what happened afterward.

Since Mugabe has basically enforced a ban on anti-government media, there
doesn't seem to be much news getting out. From some internet searches there
seems to be little external intervention in Zimbabwe. Even groups like
Amnesty and Oxfam seem to be largely ignoring the political situation, as
does the UN. South Africa and Nigera are reported to be 'quiet supporters'
of Mugabe.

What can be done? An election is due next March. What good would lobbying
the Government donow that imbabwe has withdrawn from the Commonwealth? What
can the Uniting Church do - can UnitingJustice or Overseas Aid do something?
Overseas Aid has Africa in its mandate doesn't it?

Tough situation, but something has to happen.

Wesley
