What might be happening is that the uuid plug-in is trying to get your network connection's MAC address. This is done on UNIX-type systems via "ifconfig" which is found in /sbin. Check to see if you PATH includes that directory. Non-admin accounts usually don't. You only need it for running the install to create the uuid.state file.
