I think that the lead developers are holding off detailed work to the forums because insoshi is for social networking foremost, forum generation probably second. I myself have been solicited to build untold many forum enhancements. So it's intuitive for the developers to place forum maintenance on the back burner, to keep the branding on the right path. There are quality rails forums, such as beast, that may be integrated into your insoshi deployment, for the time being. Some work, but more likely to yield results in the short term to middle term.
