"Best Christmas Present" In 1965 at Cam Ran Bay, Vietnam the mail clerk handed me a Christmas package from home. There in the middle of the box, wrapped in tissue and surrounded by brownies, was a rubber heal from a child's shoe. I do not remember what happened to the brownies, because I was too excited about the rubber heel. This was the best Christmas present any parent could ever get, and for the next ten months I carried it in my fatigue jacked because of what it represented. You see, that slightly worn heel from a child's shoe represented two years of surgery, hospitalization, and worry. Two years earlier, my family and I were living in a remote town in Maine while I was with the Air Force in New Hampshire. One morning while I was at work and my wife was cleaning the house, our eighteen month old son Jeff crawled into the kitchen to explore under the sink. In the process he took a container of Drano from under the sink and poured in his lap burning his thigh and inner knee. For the next two years, Jeff had one operation after another, trying to replace burned skin without causing scar tissue. After each operation, more scar tissue formed causing his let to contract, forcing him to walk on his tip toes. Right in the middle of all this, the Air Force sent me to Vietnam without ever seeing my son walk with a straight gait. Fortunately, while I was gone, my wife started driving 180 miles every other day to Fort Jackson Army Hospital to continue his medical care. It was there and while I was 50,000 miles away those doctors under the influence of constant prayer and God's Grace, Jeff's leg was finally straightened. When I saw that slightly worn heel I knew everything was going to be all right! Today, thirty-five years later, thousands of miles and another world away, I do not know what happened to that heel.
