"It Mattered Less Than Love" One day while discussing the subject of love, I asked my children for their definition of marriage. One of my little boys piped up and said " It's when you find someone you want to keep!" My husband and I entered our marriage with a firm conviction that it would be a lifelong commitment-not just a convenience held together by contract. We began our union on a solid foundation of shared faith, love and a mutual deire to glorify god. But that doesn't mean it has always been easy or smooth. We have had our share of struggle and disagreement. My husband is from an Armenian-European background, and I from a small town in a Southern towm in the US. We married in Switzerland we made our first home in one of its lovely valleys-very romantic especially when the full moon would slide up from behind the mountains But even this fairy tale setting could not ease the adjustments between 2 such different persons. There were so many cultural shocks and hurdes to overcome. I did not speak a word of french at the time, and with family and friends thousands of miles apart, it wasn't long before I became lonely and homesick. I discovered early on that honeymoon high was not destined to be a steady marital experience but that reality demanded the blending of 2 distinct individuals from widely differing backgrounds and cultures. Difficulties were sure to arise, misunderstandings would become full blown arguments, feelings would be hurt. But with each disagreement I found myself, more determined than ever to develop, deepen, strengthen and encourage our love and commitment to each other, Someone has said that true marriage is not without conflict, but is ever resolving its conflict. This will mean determination, under standing, seeing things from the others point of view, humility, being willing to be the first one to say I am sorry.
