      "The Princess of Please"
           by Bob Perks

It had been too long since they had seen each other.
Time and circumstance became the standard excuse. But
deep in their hearts they both knew that they were
equally at fault.

Now, it's all too late.

As she sat there holding her Daddy's hand, childhood memories
came flashing back to her. There were treasured parent-child
moments of birthdays and holidays dancing through her mind as
she sat at his bedside. But there were also painful moments, too.

Daddy often had to travel out of town and was gone for days at
a time. She was left with her grandparents because she lost
her Mom long before she could form memories of her. So she
learned to live through the stories of her Mom that Daddy shared
with her at bedtime. While other kids heard fantasy tales of
Jack and the Beanstalk, Snow White, and the Pokey Little
Puppy, she heard how wonderful and special her Mom was.

Those bedtime moments always left her wanting more.

"Daddy, please just one more?" she would beg.

Daddy would almost always comply. For there in his heart he
had stored a lifetime of magical memories of the woman he called
"The Queen of my Heart."

Vacation time was always special for her and her father, for
they spent each waking hour side by side. Even then it wasn't
enough for this young girl. She always wanted more.

"Daddy, please just one more day?" she would beg. But Daddy couldn't
comply. His busy travel schedule left little room for flexibility.

"Daddy always said I was never satisfied. While he called my
Mother "The Queen of my Heart" he referred to me as the
"Princess of Please." "Daddy, please just one more."
"Daddy, please can we ride one more time?" she said laughing.

Yes, blame time and circumstance for the years they lived apart.
But what an incredible moment this was, as she faithfully stood
by his bed during his last days. Although he was unable to speak
to her, I know in my heart he knew she was there.

I was fortunate indeed to have met her. Even more blessed when
on my last visit to the hospital I over heard her say, "Daddy,
this is your "Princess of Please." I know you can hear me.
I want you to know how much I love you." Then there was a
silence in the room and with a quivering voice she begged,
" Daddy, please just one more day."

I waited for a moment and said my goodbyes to the friend I was
visiting. I stuck my head inside the curtain that separated
the two beds in the hospital room.

"Please know I will say a prayer for you both," I said. She
smiled and turned away.

Two days later when I returned I found the bed empty.

"What happened?" I asked my friend.

"He passed away during the night," he said. "But she asked
me to give you this note."

"Thanks for being such a good listener. I asked Daddy for
one more day. But he had travel plans. I guess he had some
business to tend to in heaven."
