"MORE TO LOVE"
I hate eggs, I hate that color, I hate homework, I hate to
clean, I hate you.
That's how our day started. The word "hate" spewing out of
my seven year old daughter's lips so casually.
Ever since my children were old enough to say that word I
discouraged its use. I explained to them that hate was a very
strong word and could cause a lot of pain. I told them that
once those words were spoken they could never be taken
back.
Until recently, my explanation was enough since I was still the
major influence in their lives. A quick look from me and they
realized their mistake correcting it immediately.
Now that they are in school I hear, "Well Johnny says it and
his Mommy doesn't yell at him," and, "Well I said it in school
and my teacher didn't yell at me, how come you do?"
I had to think about that for a little while. It was one of those
questions that was unexpected and unable to be answered
without a little thought.
So I sent my daughter on her way.
"I have to think about this for a little while. We'll talk when I
have an answer for you" I explained.
Today, I finally have my answer for her. First, I explained to
her that every Mommy and Daddy have different rules for their
kids. Just because Johnny's mom doesn't yell at him for saying
hate doesn't mean that it's OK to break my rules. I went on to
explain that there would be many little children that would love
to have your eggs on their table for breakfast. Be thankful
that you have food to eat. Many little children would love to
be able to have fresh paint on their bedroom walls. Be thankful
that you have a place to sleep. Many children aren't able to
go to school for whatever the reason. Be thankful that you
have the opportunity to go to school and learn.
Many children don't have toys, half the toys that you have. Be
thankful that you have things to clean up. And last but not
least, my dear little child, there are many, many little children
in this world that pray for a mommy to love them. Be thankful
that you have a mommy that cooks you eggs for breakfast,
and puts fresh paint on your walls, a mommy that sends you
to school and does all the little extras to ensure that you get
the best education that you possibly can. Be thankful that you
have a mommy that buys you toys even when you don't
deserve them.
And most of all be thankful that you have a Mommy that loves
you.
Hate is a very strong word. Once it's said, it can never be
taken back. It's selfish, angry, spiteful, hateful, but most of
all, it is the most hurtful word in the English language.
So it's OK with me if Johnny's mom lets him say hate, but for
you, the word will not be tolerated in my home.
So the next time you think you hate something take a quick
look around you. You have more to love than you do to hate
-- and isn't love such a wonderful, happy, joyous, thing?
