At the risk of sounding condesending (And I DON"T mean to) have you 
tried the ctrl-alt-shift-+/- combination on the keyboard?  This 
combination switches screen modes in X11.  It is possible that you have 
the screen modes set up to start at 320x200 and go up to 1024x768 (sort 
of backwards).  This sequence should shift through your modes.  Again, I 
apoligize if this is a "DUH ERR" type of solution.  You just claimed to 
be a beginner...*smile*
