Hi all,
I've been lurking on this list for a month or two, absorbing info and
'girding my loins' for the day I'd take the plunge and install RH5.1. I'm
almost completely new to Unix, let alone Linux, with the exception of some
limited user experience with a shell account with an ISP over the past 8
years.
So I did it last night! I have a spare 3 gig HD for the Inspiron, which used
to hold NT and all of BackOffice (I am a trainer, teaching MS programmers
and network admins). It got unmercifully fdisked, and with the help of some
of the web pages referenced in this list running on an NT box with a net
connection, got RH5.1 running. (swapping hard drives using a screwdriver to
remove the cover is a whole different kind of dual booting! <g>)
Thanks especially to those who walked through the sound & video tweaks. I
still only have beeps, but the NeoMagic configs for X seem to work well.
Sometimes, however, I screw up and the X desktop size goes wider than my
laptop screen, with no obvious way to scroll.
My 3Com 3C589 NIC works like a charm, and Netscape 4.05 running through my
proxy server and cable modem means I can postpone figuring out how to config
a modem and PPP. Netscape and Acrobat are the only apps I've installed that
weren't part of the RH disstribution RPMs. Had to get immersed in the world
of gunzip and tar in a hurry!
I used the LILO memory tweak to tell it I have 144M of RAM, but is there a
way I can find out my memory usage and how much it really thinks I have?
Now I need to learn UNIX itself, I suppose! <g>
Thanks all! I look forward to learning more from this list and from playing
with this new toy.
