It turns out that RedHat 5.1 was supplied with XF86 3.3.2 and (see the new 
FAQ about Xwrapper stuff at www.xfree86.org) and 
/usr/X11R6/bin/X was pointing to Xwrapper so the X server was never started.
 
I just did

ln -sf /usr/X11R6/bin/XBF_NeoMagic /usr/X11R6/bin/X

and this solves the problem.  Everything now works fined.
