Hi there,
It 's been a couple of non-stop weeks of trying that I can't get PCMCIA to
work - it crashes the machine just before probing these IRQs, just like
some others have said in this list. It looks almost certainly like an IRQ
problem, but some how my tricks don't work yet. Where in the pcmcia script
is the do_scan=0 supposed to go?I am using SuSE 5.2(2.0.34) and
PCMCIA 3.0.5 and the new bios, but the exact problem has persisted over various
Redhat and Slackware kernels and boot disks and PCMCIA packages. So, here
come the questions, sound first:
I did get sound working just by recompiling the kernel with options like
those mentioned by others in this list, but I couldn't get the restricted
OSS drivers to work (funny to have the free stuff they release running
better than the stuff they ask money for). I 've tried virtually all their
"Crystal 423x" options, and they have plenty. I 've been probably let down
by my choice of IRQ's and base addresses, and I particularly would like to
know this: both the kernel and the OSS ask twice about the IRQ's, apparently
one for the Midi/OPL stuff and one for the "standard" stuff. However, the BIOS
only displays one IRQ number, and the "alias sound ..." options people have
posted show only a single IRQ. On those occasions that people have posted a
second IRQ(as required in kernel configuration), it is usually 9, which is
also the default in OSS configuration.
Does anybody know if and when this IRQ is of any use, and which function the
BIOS IRQ refers to?
Having said that, my "no name" 56K PCMCIA modem (Lucent chipset, it calls
itself a Lucent Venus modem, apparently the chipset is one of the 3 big
standards in 56K, but they offer no support) reports
under WIN NT4 as using IRQ 9, COM 3 - but refuses to provide me with any services
from this device (it shows up as inactive/unavailable). I 've turned off
sound in BIOS just to protect myself from this OPL-related IRQ, but neither
my Linux or my NT problems were solved. Any ideas how I could get this no
name device flash-upgraded? - if I ever get it running that is. It says it
is flash-upgradeable, and is probably 100% identical to named products out
there, but I have no clue which. And, is anybody doing "voicemodem" things
with Linux? I am still trying to figure out what the difference is between a
voice/fax/modem and a fax/modem like mine. BTW, are these COM port, IRQ and
base addresses the device reports configurable by software? And does anybody
no if these Winmodems have any chance of ever being supported?
And finally, this bit about the MPEG decoder somebody mentioned - how can I
tell if it's in my machine and how do I get it out? I really wouldn't feel
very nice trying to take the whole machine apart risking even more problems.
Thanks for everybody's patience
Tasos T.
PS. my PCMCIA port is actually OK (I think) since I had an ethernet card
running without problems under NT4. And a couple of things I didn't dare ask
in the main message: anybody knows how to install Windoze on a Jaz drive
through the parallel or even PCMCIA SCSI port? The FAQs say that if the SCSI
is on your mamaboard it will behave as an IDE drive, but what to do when you
got it external?
my hopes rest with LILO for dual-booting. Also, anybody knows if there is
ANY way at all to have DOS booting (LILO or otherwise) beyond Cylinder 1023?
I was trying to get OpenDos running, but it is too much to move around my
NTFS partitions (that was an error folks, always have a plain DOS FAT
first partition, even 1 sector will do several tricks!)
