Thanks for your comments, Marvin.  The mixer that comes with Window
Maker works fine, I can control the volume of CD, wave output, midi
etc. (which I couldn't without the OSS/Free patch).  My problem,
though, is "chopped" output: Suppose I have a sound file "fox" that
says "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog." Using different
playback methods, I get the following:

* cat fox.au > /dev/audio  =>  "The qui"
* play fox.wav  => "The quick *krk* brown fox *krk* jumps [...]"
  (where *krk* sounds like a scratch on a record; those peaks occur
   regularly about every second, but at least it plays the whole
   file)
* playmidi fox.mid => "" (but no error message either)
* x11amp fox.mp3 => "Thethethethethethethethethethethethe[...]"
* Window Maker sound module => "The quick bro*krk*ox jumps *krk*ver
                                the *krk*zy do*krk*"

Playing CDs, though, works fine.
