You don't know what the PCMCIA services say? If you aren't sure,
you should be able to drop to the shell during the install(on virtual
console 2) and then re-insert the card(something should happen--a message
saying the card was recognized or something). You might try rerunning
cardmgr(if you can find it that is) with the -v (verbose) flag. It's
possible the cardservices are rigged in the kernel though, and I don't
know how to work that one.
You will want Windows first because it's crappy software and won't
boot from any other place(at least, 95 wouldn't and I'm assuming they
don't care enough to fix it). In fact, the Windows 98 installation won't
intall on a Linux fdisked partition. I believe Windows fdisk is broken or
something, so you have to partition with the Windows install. Linux is
flexible and can go anywhere so you can put that as hda2. You need to
boot with the windows boot disk(or CD possibly) and run fdisk. The only
partition you can make with that is the windows'. After that and
formatting and installing windows, you can go install Linux and fdisk the
rest of it.
Booting is a judgement call from this point. You can either use
LOADLIN or LILO or possibly something like System Commander(which is
highly recommended by me, but costs money). LOADLIN would be possible by
using the Windows bootloader and putting in one of those multi-boots, one
being Linux. The LILO option is not always a good one. I have had some
problems(minor) with trying to boot from a master boot record de LILO.
It's all good though. The other thing is that if you use LOADLIN from
Windows it takes way longer to boot and you get most of the windows
screwing with your system(i.e. irq settings, etc.) which will happen as
well if you go into windows then warm boot. That will screw with Linux,
a warm boot from windows to Linux. Anyway, have fun.
