For at least some PCs/laptops CDROM drivers are in the SYSTEMS UTILITY DISK for which my INSPIRON 3000 can be accessed at http://support.dell.com/filelib/system.asp?sysid=INS_PNT_PNT_3000 as file i3ksysty.exe contains CDROM drivers for the SANYO TORiSAN CDR_U200-Z CD-ROM in the A:\TOOLS\ subdirectory of the expanded file set on a floppy disk. Also TORiSAN drivers are available at: http://www.torisan.co.jp/cd_rom.htm More generically, the useful search term for such drivers at Dell is CD-ROM as contrasted to CDROM though sometimes they are un helpfully buried in utility disks such as i3ksysty.exe These drivers can be used either on the hard drive or a floppy. For booting to WIN95/98 DOS from the hard disk put the example line generated from a i3ksysty.exe in A:\tools\config.hd in an c:\config.dos file and example line A:\tools\autoexec.hd in an c:\autoexec.dos file Upon Boot press F8 to get alternative Win95 options and choose COMMAND PROMPT Only to force use of CONFIG.DOS and AUTOEXEC.DOS Similarly, the CDROM driver lines can be be added to CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files of a boot floppy generated under WIN95/98 through Start>Settings>CONTROL PANEL> Add/Remove Programs > StartUp Disk With the Boot floppy in the side bay in this case the CDROM (DVD also?) can be attached externally with a parallel cable as described in the Laptop User' Guide (hard copy).
