Make a file /usr/local/bin/pcmcia with lines

#!/bin/sh
/etc/init.d/pcmcia
# USAGE (start|stop|restart)

then
        chmod a+x /usr/local/bin/pcmcia
Thereafter
        pcmcia stop
will turn off service and unload all kernel modules dependent upon it.
With my system under Debian 2.0 Linux only the psaux (mouse) kernel
remains loaded.
This saves some power, though I haven't quantitated.

You may get a "no high memory warning" upon
        pcmcia start
But this hasn't manifestly caused any problem.

I don't remember the exact number but many PCMCIA modem cards can be
significant power draws (both active and in standby). I have an HP200LX,
which is a great DOS product that has been replaced by lousy (Win CE)
products. Anyway, it runs on two AA's. Most current PCMCIA's drain to
much power to use at all! Of course two AA's don't add up to a big
lithium battery, but I would check your specs. Also, note that PC
magazine (no hate mail please) does a reasonable job of giving realistic
run times.
