A quick summary of what is known about running X-windows on the I7K
First, the stock Free Drivers do not work. The original 3.3.3 did not
work at all for me. The most current 3.3.3 is closer (late December
release date). Since ATI is listed as an Xfree sponsor it is reasonable
to expect that we will get a stock Xfree solution soon. Note the December
release comes up, but menus are cut and there are many strange screen
artifacts. Of course the VGA (not particularly useful) version runs fine.
Steveh, web site listed in previous posts. Has compiled a list of work
arounds.
1st, trick the computer into believing an external monitor is present,
this worked with the original 3.3.3
2nd, use the 5.1 development kernel to provide VESA frame buffering
3rd, use a patched Xfree to drive the 15' screen with 8meg ram
As far as I know either the 2nd or 3rd have worked for everyone. The
first works also, but requires one to build a dongle.
I will attempt to keep up with the status of the stock Xfree driver and
let you know when a stable one is available.
