You are probably being burned by Plug'n'Play. Win95/98 do PnP,
WinNT and Linux do not.
This hasn't been said for a week or so, so I'll say it again :-).
You should _NOT_ enable PnP in your BIOS. If you dual-boot to
Win95/98 and Win sees something new (or maybe on a whim in Bill's
mission to take over the world :-), it can totally change your
interrupts and IO port addressing, causing your linux (or WinNT,
but we don't care about that :-) to stop working.
You should enable your peripherals in the BIOS and write down the
interrupts and IO ports that it uses. Well OK, we are all too
lazy to write down the values, but at least pick the default values
and make sure they don't conflict. I don't recall off-hand what
the "auto" selection does, but it probably is evil too.
