The two best pages for me to configure pcmcia on my Inspiron 3200 were:

Basically, the base install makes the system crash on boot.  You then boot
up with a rescue disk (I'm using Red Hat 5.2) and change the
/etc/sysconfig/pcmcia.  Then it worked.
