I haven't had time to attempt any recording under Linux yet, but
I have set my machine up to record under Windows 95. Here is
what I've got attached to my Inspiron 3000:
I've got a Plextor PlexWriter 8/20 (8x). Plextor also makes a
PlexWriter 4/12 (4x). These drives have large caches (4MB and
2MB respectively) and are very good performers. Performance and
reliability are key for making good recordings. You will get
hissing and popping if your setup is not fast enough.

You will have to get a SCSI adaptor. A parallel port interface is
not fast enough to support recording. I suggest you take advantage
of the CardBus interface your Inspiron has and get a card
like the Adaptec SlimSCSI 1480. Check the pcmcia-cs package to
see if this card is supported. Other cards like the Adaptec 1460
may be better supported but don't have a CardBus interface (much
slower, won't take full advantage of your Ultra SCSI components).

I believe USB is not fast enough, either. I've yet to see a USB
CDR drive.
