It's not exactly required-- I've had to use ssh -X to run the OpenSolaris GUI installer remotely in order to install OpenSolaris on x86 platforms that do not have any graphics (yes, they do exist). That worked quite well. VNC is another option that OpenSolaris could support like Redhat/Fedora does. Both are short-term band-aids for the missing text-mode install functionality but are useful in their own right. I'd love to be able to use the GUI installer on SPARC even if it wasn't running on the machine's local framebuffer.
