Thanks for the hint: The root filesystem was more or less full (only 
some MB free space).

I cleaned up the root fs in both environments (the active one and the 
one to patch) and the patch installation worked.

Drawback here is that I still not know which of the boot environments 
was the cuplrit -- the one that I won't to patch or the active one?
