"amd64" indicates that your kernel is running in 64-bit mode; i386 would 
mean 32-bit mode - there's a history to the naming which I can't recall in 
exact detail, but as long as you're not desperate to have your box run in 
32-bit mode (and don't notice any problems related to this), you should be 
fine.
