I notice an error, maybe this is a copy-paste error?

On zpool create you used rpool
On lucreate you used mpool

Maybe lucreate gives a bad error messages when the pool does not exist?  Or
maybe you have an mpool AND an rpool, but specified mpool?  Boot is not
supported on anything other than mirrors or single-disk pools.
