You need a *minimum* of 512M of ram for the virtual machine. Anything less and it won't work. That said, 2008.11 releases (certainly those based on build 99 or higher) don't currently work with 512M of ram and require more (768M seems to be ok). We're working on tracking down why this is, since our goal is to have a system installation requirement of 512M. So 2008.05 should work just fine in 512M (though very very very slowly). That said, 1.5.6 is awfully old (and pre-dates Sun's involvement not that that means anything). While I don't know that your issues can be solved in the later releases, I do know that I personally have installed 2008.05 and 2008.11 in both 1.6.6 and 2.0.2 just fine (with the aforementioned memory caveats). That would be my suggestion, upgrade virtualbox for starters and add more memory if possible to your host so you can free some up for virtual machines. Cheers, -- Glenn
