That's odd. Those instructions work for myself and others. You were running as 'root' right? I know there have been a lot of changes in X since 2008.05. Perhaps you might try a later build of what is going to become 2008.11. http://genunix.org/distributions/indiana/osol-0811-98.iso This is slightly larger than a CD so you'll need to burn it to a DVD (and of course will need a DVD drive in the SC420).
