I guess you probably didn't invoke format(1M) command as root.
But since iostat(1M) reported your disk, I assume that format(1M)
will find it as well. Could you please verify when running
"format -e" as root ?

Since it seems you might be encountering issue similar to

1123 Finding Disks never completes; CDROM light blinking
http://defect.opensolaris.org/bz/show_bug.cgi?id=1123

could you please try to run Solaris installer with debug verbosity
mode enable in order to find out where it is hanging ?

In order to do it, after you boot LiveCD, please run following commands
from terminal window:

$ export LS_DBG_LVL=4
$ pfexec /usr/bin/gui-install

After installer hangs for some time in disk discovery phase, could
you please provide content of /tmp/install_log file ?

Also, how long is installer hanging there ? Is it finally able to
finish that phase or is it hanging there forever (hours) ?
